Here we go
Steps To Optimize yor Computer
(I do this many times per week so realize it is always a work in progress)
I am not responsible for your mistakes, that is why you can pay me $80.00 to do it perfectly.
  1. First thing is turn on computer (new or old) and watch.
  2. Wait for 3 minutes and then right click taskbar and select task manager.
  3. Go to processes and note how many are running. Less than 40 is desirable. Less than 30 and you know it is optimized.
  4. Next check performance tab and see how much memory is being used. A good running xp pro os should be at around 250 megabytes.
  5. Next check how much cpu usage is. 0 is ideal, but 2 or 3 is cool. It should not be spiking.
  6. Ok now you see some goals so HERE we go.
  7. Update your os. Go to startmenu and select windows update.
  8. Follow their lead and be patient…
  9. Reboot.
  10. Go to http://www.filehippo.com/ and download:
    • ccleaner
    • threatfire
    • mozilla
    • malwarebytes
    • picassa
    • hijackthis
    • updatechecker
    • defraggler
    • 7zip
    • rightclick image convertor
    • open office
    • VLC video player
    • Windows Media Player 11
    • Adobe Reader 9
    • Sandboxie
    • Flashplayer
    • Java runtime
    • utorrent
    • skype
    • Video drivers
    • Notepad++
    • Quicktime alternative
    • k-lite codec pack
    • dvd shrink
    • dotnet framework
    • other drivers you know you need
    • some of the funstuff like google earth and paint.
  11. Dont get more defense/security unless you know it well and like it for sure.
  12. For the lazy click this link: http://ninite.com/installer/b677693f1d305a0457a0a81036ef5eeda3f638dd
    • Ninite installs software fast with default settings and says "no" to browser toolbars and other junk.
    • Ninite checks your PC's language and 64-bit support to install the latest, best version of each program.
    • Ninite runs on Windows XP/Vista/7 and works in the background unattended and 100% hands-free.
    • All Ninite does is automatically download and install the apps you select. Not even Ninite is installed.
    • People use Ninite to install a million apps every month.
  13. Make sure windows firewall is ON.
  14. Install ccleaner and run it completely.
  15. Fix your registry
  16. Disable unneeded startup programs http://www.windowsstartup.com/download.php might help.
  17. Uninstall all crapware and outdated software like:
    • AOL
    • expired programs
    • Windows Defender
    • trial software
    • norton anything
    • spybot
    • stuff you never use
    • toolbars
    • ect…
  18. Make sure you will only have threatfire for antivirus protection.
  19. Malwarebytes is not free for real time Malware protection, so if worried it is worth the payment. You can manually scan downloads for free however. Most Malware realtime programs are resource hogs.
  20. reboot >>> much better already.
  21. Now install malwarebytes, update and run full scan.
  22. Now install threatfire, update and run full scan.
  23. Update and run full scan of malwarebytes and ccleaner at least weekly.
  24. Aim all Downloads to the same Folder.
  25. Put your music in mydocs>music.
  26. Then organize pics, videos, docs, ect.
  27. Install all other programs and reboot.
  28. Watch out for toolbars and default stuff as you check the boxes.
  29. All programs have help menus and websites for directions, but pretty easy overall.
  30. This part is a little tricky, but well worth the time.
Go to Start >>Run, type services.msc and press enter. Leftclick on the status bar twice to move all the started service to the top. Double leftclick on the ServiceName you wish to disable. Change the Startup Type to Disabled then select >>Apply and OK
  31. Services that you can disable on most systems:
    • Alerter
    • Distributed Link Tracking Client
    • Help and Support
    • Indexing Service
    • IPSEC Services
    • Messenger
    • Portable Media Serial Number
    • Remote Registry Service
    • Secondary Logon
    • SSDP Discovery Service
    • Telnet
    • Upload Manager
  32. Shutoff error reporting.
  33. Click start>>settings>>control panel>>administration>>services>>look for the error reporting service>>"stop" the service choose "deactivated" as start-up parameter>>ok
  34. Turn off language bar.
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options.
    2. On the Languages tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details.
    3. Under Preferences, click Language Bar.
    4. Deselect the Show the Language bar on the desktop check box.
  35. I do not use or rely on system restore, so get a good backup software and use it. Then Turn off system restore. Most external harddrives come with backup software so still free.
  36. Run Defragler
  37. Set Mozilla as Default browser.
  38. Go to Mozilla and get addons like:
    • adblocker
